5 reasons to love your Gen Z associates

Whenever a new generation enters the workforce, there is bound to be discomfort. The things that worked for our associates before suddenly don't quite resonate. We question whether new associate "asks" are reasonable as we compare them to current norms. But eventually we come out the other side, integrating the lessons and perspectives of the new generation - and we're better for it!

Here are some things that have us feeling optimistic for the impact Gen Z will have on law firm practice over the coming years.


1. They are unafraid to express their individuality.


Step aside Brooks Brothers. This generation is bringing style and individuality to the workplace. You might just find yourself following in their footsteps.

2. They destigmatize attention to mental health.

Gen Z views routine attention to mental health as a sign of strength, not weakness, and they are open about it. We think this is a breath of fresh air in a profession that has traditionally valued perseverance over mental well-being.


3. They will help us innovate.

As the first "digital natives," technology is second nature for Gen Z. While the legal industry is not renowned for its technological prowess, this generation can save us from ourselves. They will be leaders in fearlessly adopting new technology that can help us all operate more efficiently.

4. Their tendency is to "talk it out."

As a generation, this bunch prefers dialogue to confrontation, and they value transparency. We see a path to healthier communication and problem solving in the work environment.

5. Diversity, equity & inclusion is a core value for Gen Z.

Gen Z doesn't just care about diversity and inclusion - for them, it's foundational. It drives their decision-making, and they are demanding it, not just in the workplace but as consumers as well. And they view diversity more broadly than previous generations, including identity and points of view.

This generation has great potential to shape a vibrant, collaborative workplace where differences are respected and valued.
